The following steps will help get you on the road to realizing your dreams of becoming part of a career field that is growing at a rapid pace.
Step One
The first thing that you should do is to gain admission to one of the few programs throughout the nation that trains physician assistants. There are some prerequisites that you will have to complete first and that is generally a four year course of study where you have gained your Bachelor’s degree with 8 hours of human anatomy and physiology. While there are many schools that can give you the educational foundation you need you should take care to find out which ones are accepted by the physician assistant program you wish to attend. Accreditation is something that is held in high regard with most programs, but your school should agree with the education credentials you have.
Step Two
Becoming a physician assistant and entering a field of medicine that is growing fast requires that you learn everything you can about it. You will be required to spend 50 to 200 hours following around a working physician assistant who is going about his or her daily work. Programs require from 50 to 200 hours in such activities.
Step Three
As you continue on your path to becoming a physician assistant you will have to get some references from professionals that can attest to your qualifications to entering the program. These references should come from medical professionals such as other physician assistant practitioners or a medical doctor. You could also ask one of your professors to write a reference for you.
Step Four
Make sure that you learn what it takes to pass the GRE. It is also recommended that you study vocabulary by learning a minimum of one new vocabulary word each day, and one new question that is expected to appear on the GRE every day. Likewise you will want to learn the vocabulary that is used in the profession you will become part of.
Step Five
Get your application in early on if you are considering becoming a physician assistant. There are some rewards that you will get by getting your application in early and that includes fees that are lower. You may also be invited to interviews first as well. Get your CASPA essay in early as well.
Sixth Step
Get ready for the interview if you are serious about becoming a physician assistant. Know the answers to questions such as why you decided that you wanted to become a physician assistant, and why you chose this particular school for your education. One of them will likely be what led you to want to become a physician assistant as well as why you want to be part of the program they offer.
Step Seven
You must also decide that you want to look your best during the interview. Conservative attire is always best.
