Your Future Can Be Bright After Getting Your University Distance Learning Degree!

With advancements in the information technology arena escalating at such breakneck speed, it should come as no surprise that of all the STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) occupations, one of the fastest growing is computer software engineering. In fact, it’s grown so fast the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports it splitting into two definitive specialties:  Software Systems Engineers and Applications Engineers. While there are overlaps between them, they are well on their way towards becoming their own unique careers, with different needs and skill sets, and it’s worth one’s while to find the best online degree program for entry. For this article we’ll discuss systems engineering.

A software system engineer is responsible for the construction, maintenance and/or expansion of computer systems. They examine a corporation’s or person’s needs regarding their information technology and then implement their innovations, additions and corrections. The job isn’t just restricted to hardware. Very often they also work on an organization’s intranets (the inside communications system linking an employer’s or client’s computers). The responsibilities can also include the creation and implementation of security systems and data integrity, a growing vital concern.

Systems engineers usually are employed by larger corporations. They are either set up or work for consultant groups. In many cases, they are part of a marketing or sales staff, providing logistical and technical support. As every company has unique MIS requirements, consulting software engineers identify new needs and changes to existing systems.

While one can start with an Associate’s degree in Computer Science then work-study up, it’s better to get a Bachelor’s degree. Systems engineers also do a lot of work with hardware, so minors of mechanical and/or electronic engineering and math are also highly suggested. If one intends to eventually be a consultant, basic business courses are also a good idea. One needn’t go to a brick and mortar school. Many online colleges are highly recommended.

As the information technology arena is one of constant upgrading and evolution, many systems engineers continue until they have achieved their Masters and then their PhD. Then they maintain accounts with an online school to stay up to date. Employers often provide incentives or refunds for this as having up-to-date employees is just plain good business.

As the field is classified as growing faster than average (over 20% over the next decade), many organizations are offering financial aid to meet the demand. Not only can systems engineers go for standard Pell and state grants, but should contact the National Science Foundation for possible S-STEM scholarships. Also, companies such as Microsoft, Intel and IBM have both internship and scholarship programs for budding software geniuses. According to the Bureau, the salary of a systems engineer is pretty darn good. The median salary is slightly over $92,000 with about ten year’s experience. Salaries can go into the hundred thousand arenas as one rises up the corporate ladder. Benefits packages usually include bonuses and commissions, insurance, retirement programs and education refunds.

So, while systems engineering is a relatively young field, it has the promise of being not only an incredible one in the here and now, but for the foreseeable future.  Those with an interest will find that their online degree is geared toward this growing field.  Your degree in science of some type, with further education as one’s career progresses, will allow the student to remain cutting edge.
